I create a backup image, then installed RetroPie on the SD card, and the cabinet booted up just fine (of course, I didn't have any games and I'm not sure what controller files I should have copied over.)

Restored the original image and still same problem.

Is there a way I can get the latest OS/recovery image to install? I'm using Raspberry Pi Imager on Windows to setup the SD card, as I never even got to the Wi-Fi connection screen on the Fightstick.

Somehow my Atari image became corrupt and I can no longer access it or the original image to restore it. Is there any chance for someone to resend me the download link so I can reimage my SD card?

Power down your arcade and plug in a keyboard and mouse. Turn the arcade back on and hold shift when this screen appears:

After the system initializes into recovery mode, you’ll see a list of available images like the one below:

Select the image you would like to install and click “Install”. You’ll get a warning about overwriting existing OSs. Select Yes and the installation will begin.

You’ll see the installation window next, which will download and install the new image. This can take a bit of time, especially if you have a slower internet connection.

Once the installation is complete click the OK button. The system will automatically boot to Emulation Station and you’ll be greeted by a new category for Atari 5200.

Installing the new image took me about 15 minutes. Downloading the new image is the most time consuming part, so the total time can vary depending on the speed of your internet connection.

TL;DR; Thinking of doing a community project to support the lack of support from MicroCenter.

I recently inherited an Atari Fight Stick (no trackball) and decided I would finally pick up a Raspberry Pi 3+ to install into my Atari Fight Stick with Trackball and while in the process of setting it up when I decided to check for updates to the 32GB Atari SD card sold by MicroCenter and am seeing a common theme… this project has been abandoned. :\

So in the name of preservation I am going to look at migrating the project to a more recent Raspbian OS and hopefully support a larger selection of controllers or at least the ones promised before the support ended.

If you’re using a controller without a trackball the spinner is plug and play, but getting both the trackball and spinner working together takes a little more work. Before we get started I want to explain the technical issue using both at once causes- skip the next paragraph if you just want to get to the fix.

The trackball and spinner are both seen by the Raspberry Pi as a mouse. The trackball is essentially an old school ball mouse flipped upside down, and the spinner uses an optical encoder and microcontroller to emulate a mouse that only provides one dimension of motion. These devices are known to the Linux side of the Raspberry Pi as “mouse1” and “mouse0”. Each game listens to one mouse at a time. The default global setting is mouse0. Since we want some games to listen to mouse0 and some to listen to mouse1, we need to create per game configuration files for each game that should be using mouse1. While there is a way to get the names of each mouse used by the Linux operating system from the command line, Retroarch (the program running the emulators) aliases the mice differently so it’s best to determine which device is which by plugging both in and loading up a game.

The instructions below were written for Micro Center’s Retropie image that is distributed with our retro gaming kits (like the Atari Pi Kit and Stand Up Arcade kits) and the Atari Games SD card. These instructions might not work perfectly for other images, but should give you a good starting point.

In addition to a Retropie setup you’ll also need a USB keyboard connected to the Raspberry Pi. You can also SSH into the Pi using terminal on Linux or macOS or PuTTy, WSL, or another terminal or SSH program on Windows, but setting up an SSH connection won't be covered in this guide.

First, we need to identify which device is the default. Hook up both the spinner and track ball with the system powered off, then boot it up. You can determine which device is the default by opening a game like Avalanche or Crystal Castles and trying both controllers. One should allow you to move, and one should be unresponsive. Make note of which one works, as this is the default “mouse” with index 0. In my case this was the track ball, so I’ll be creating config files for games I want to play with the spinner. If neither are working, it's possible you've selected a game that doesn't support mouse inputs. Many home consoles (Like the Atari 2600) will not work with either controller. Exit the game and return to the main menu.

Most of the screenshots in this guide end with the command raspi2png –p screenshots/#.png. You can ignore these lines, it’s just the command I used to take screenshots of the terminal.

Type the following command, which will move us into the directory our roms are stored in:

cd RetroPie/roms

to get a list of files and sub directories in this directory. You should see a sub directory for each game system:

We’ll use nano to create a new file, so use the command below to open an empty file for our game:

nano <game name>.cfg

Nano is a command line text editor that’s great for quick changes like these. Make sure the file extension for the rom (.zip in the case of arcade games) and .cfg are included in the filename. In my case, I used nano avalnche.zip.cfg. Note the misspelling of “avalanche”- this is how the rom is named, and it’s important to use the exact name of the rom.

After running this command you should be greeted by a mostly empty window. There will be a list of commands at the bottom and a banner at the top that says “GNU Nano” and the file name, like this:

This is our empty file. Add the following lines:

input_player1_mouse_index = “2”

config_save_on_exit = false

This tells our game to listen to the mouse with index 2, and not to overwrite the config file when the game is exited. Press ctrl+x to exit nano, press y to save changes, and press enter to save the file. You can verify the file was created using `ls`. Reboot the system from the command line with this command:

sudo reboot

Load up the game you just configured and try out the controllers. Your default controller should be unresponsive, but the second controller should work now. In my case I could move the tower in Avalanche with the joystick or spinner, but not the trackball.

Creating files for more games is even easier. The cp command lets us make a copy of a file. All we need to do is use cd to get back into the directory our games are stored in and copy the config file we just made. For example, I wanted to use the spinner for Tempest as well, so I used the following commands:

cd RetroPie/roms/arcade

cp avalanche.zip.cfg tempest.zip.cfg

Here I’ve used the ls command before and after using cp to duplicate a config file. This let me verify the copy was successfully created:

Those of you with a bit of Linux experience might be tempted to find the mouse indexes in /dev/input/, but I found the information listed here doesn’t match the index used by Retroarch. Retroarch assigns its own indexes to the mice which don’t match the indexes assigned by Linux.

The new spinner feels much more natural for games that only involve 1 dimension of movement like Tempest and Avalanche, but isn’t great for games like Crystal Castles that involve 2 dimensional movement. Having both mounted in your cabinet is the best of both worlds, and a few minutes of configuration is all it takes to get both controllers up and running.

I love my Atari Ultimate Fight Stick but I would like to upgrade it.

Here is my setup: I have the Raspberry Pi 3B+ with a MicroSD card image of the MC Atari 4.5.1 (latest release) on it, as well as a fresh install image from Retropie.org Retropie v4.7.1 (latest release). This method worked on both images. However, I'm now starting to prefer working with the Retropie v4.7.1 image since I'm able to install additional emulators on it such as ADVMAME1_4 which I wasn't able to do with the MC Atari image, but I'll eventually get around to figuring that out later.

Dual Fight Stick with Trackball, 2 additional USB Spinners added to it for P1 and P2 spinner control. I also added an Inland USB3.0 7 port powered hub with switches to the setup, since I wanted more USB connectivity than the 4 ports provided by the Raspberry Pi. (Don't mind the masking tape labels, only there for reference until I make some nicer looking ones :D)

Goals of this write-up:

Make system so trackball and both spinner can be used for games such as Centipede, Golden Tee, and Bowling (trackball games) as well as Tempest, Tetris, etc (Slider games).

So let's get into it....................

Hoping you could help a dad who's trying to add more games to the fightstick. Bought the version with Raspberry Pi already installed.

I'm not the most tech savy person, so hoping to get help from someone who's already succeeded in doing this. Hoping not to have to wipe the existing RetroPie image away, but willing to do that if it's the only way.

I booted the Atari Ultimate Arcade and while I was pressing various buttons on the stick, some dialog box came up and then went away. From that point on, I get nothing when I start the fight stick. I am wondering if it is a defective SD card in the RPI or I accidently clicked an option that is preventing it from booting.

Please advise.

I wanted to ask if anyone can confirm if I can add additional Atari 2600/5200/7800 games to this card or am I stuck with the games that come pre-installed?

Also, is it possible to copy the built in Atari theme and use it on a different MicroSD card with a fresh Retropie installation so that I could add additional roms/games to the system? I'm asking this in case you can't add more games to the official image that comes with the Atari 32GB MicroSD image. I've been wanting to make an Atari Retropie image with all my 2600/5200/7800 games, but the themes I've found so far just don't feel right to me. The new MC theme screenshots I saw look basic, but capture that feel of the basic graphics and looks of the old Atari systems or the games on those systems. I really want to use that theme. :)

Any info is appreciated.

We worked with Hyperkin to design this new and improved version of the Trooper controller for the Atari 2600, dubbed the Trooper II. It’s a USB controller with the same general layout of the original controller, but features a dedicated start and select button, two shoulder buttons, and an additional button on the top. This makes it perfect for emulation systems like Retroarch that provide their own in game menus or rely on the start and select buttons to exit games. It's compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. The Trooper II is available exclusively from Micro Center.

Support for the Trooper V2 is not currently baked into the Retropie image distributed on our Atari Micro SD Card (including our Atari Pi kit, arcade cabinet kits, and Ultimate Fight Sticks). However, adding the configuration for this controller is fairly simple. 

Start by downloading the file “Trooper V2 Trooper V2 .txt” at the bottom of this post. After downloading the file, change the file extension to .cfg so the file is named "Trooper V2     Trooper V2   .cfg" Next, copy the file to the Raspberry Pi directory “/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/autoconfig/udev”. As a Windows user I use WinSCP for this, but you can also use the SCP command in a macOS or Linux terminal. Reboot your system, and make sure you have the Trooper V2 and another controller or keyboard connected. Press the “start” button on your second controller or keyboard, scroll down to “Configure Input”, and press A. From here, follow the instructions posted on the Retropie docs to configure your controller. Move the joystick in the appropriate direction for up, down, left, and right, and use the images below for the layout of the remaining buttons.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a way to fill the chip so the surface is somewhat seamless? I'm not looking to haul this back the store or seek some sort of retail resolution on this, chips happen and it could happen down the road anyway.
