Q: What are the biggest differences between the tracking on the original Oculus Rift and the Oculus Rift S?
A: Unlike the original Oculus Rift, which used external sensors/cameras to track the position of the Oculus headset and Touch controllers, the Rift S uses “inside-out tracking” with five cameras/sensors which are built right into the headset.
Q: What plug-ins are required for the Rift S?
A: The Rift S connects to a computer via one DisplayPort connection (or mini-DisplayPort with an adapter included) and one USB 3 connection.
Q: Can I use an adapter to convert the DisplayPort connection from the headset to my PC?
A: The only adapter known to work with the Rift S is the included DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort adapter. The Rift S will not work with an adapter such as a DisplayPort to HDMI.
Q: What is the minimum graphics card required for the Oculus Rift S?
A: Oculus recommends that your PC has a NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 equivalent graphics card or greater.
Q: Where do I download the software for the Rift S?
A: Go to www.oculus.com/setup and click Download Oculus Rift Software. Open the Oculus app that downloads and click Install Now to begin the installation.
Q: Does the Oculus Rift S come with built-in headphones?
A: The Rift S has built-in speakers on each side of the headset; however, it does feature a 3.5mm jack on the left side of the headset where headphones can be plugged in and used instead of the built-in speakers.
Q: Can I use external sensors/cameras from the original Rift with the Rift S?
A: Currently the external sensors/cameras from the original Rift are not compatible with the Rift S.
Q: Can I use USB 2.0 to connect the Rift S to my computer?
A: The Rift S will need to be plugged in via USB 3.0/3.1 to be detected properly.
Q: Does the Rift S work with SteamVR?
A: Yes, the Oculus Rift S works with SteamVR.
Q: Can the first gen Touch controllers from the original Rift work with the Rift S?
A: No, the original generation Touch controllers do not work with the Rift S. Only the 2nd gen controllers included will work.
