PowerSpec B945

While in Fairfax, Virginia I went to Micro Center and bought this system. So far impressed but haven't installed the video card yet. The main intent for this system is image processing of CMOS/CCD data acquired from telescope systems at home and remote. Next step is installing the video card, an AMD Radeon RX7600. I have a conference in NY for 4 days, yes astronomy imaging related, and when I get back the new 10TB 3.5" HD should be here so I'll install that now that a quick call to Support opened my eyes to the HD bays on the back of the system.

Looking forward to getting this system up and running. I use a program called Pix Insight to calibrate and process the data. It's not unusual to have 30 or more dark frames to create a master dark, many more bias frames for a master, flat frames that are created with 12-16 frames per filter, up to 8 filters. Raw data files that on average are 6 hours per filter that I expose at 15 minutes per frame to 30 minutes depending on filter used. The processes used vary depending on type of data and object imaged.

Looking forward to seeing how well this system performs for these tasks.

Suggestions welcomed.

Should be a relatively easy upgrade. With the GPU you will need to break the PSU cable bundle and route the PCIe cables. We zip tied the 12VPWR for Nvidia cards in the chassis, but not the PCIe cables.

  • Thanks Mike. Just got back from a 4 day Astronomy Conference in Suffern, NY. Hope to install the video card tomorrow along with a 3.5" HDD and 2.5" SSD. I just posted another post on the drives…..sorry.

  • Taking this a bit further, I felt confident after having built a number of systems over the past 20 years, and ordered more RAM for this system. It came with 128gb of RAM (2X64) so I ordered another pair, same make/model but the system would not boot after installing the additional. I removed it and back online. So what changed that identical RAM wouldn't work? Or have I forgotten something crucial?

Both the installed and new RAM are G.Skill Flare X5 F56000J. I'm very confused.

Vendors change the components over time. Might not actually be the same. Screenshot the label on both modules and post it here.

  • I took the memory out and got the specs but the attached show they are the same brand, model, and model number. I made sure f that prior to ordering the memory. The PC is less than a month old.

  • With all 4 memory sticks installed it will not boot.

  • After installing the new memory and powering on the system it would not power on. I removed the two new sticks and powered up without issue. I didn't open the configuration….actually thinking about it I don't recall right off how I would do that as I haven't done so in a long while.

Memory in the system is a Hynix M-Die. What you bought is a Samsung B-Die. Massive change here, it's not going to work together.

To elaborate I'm reading the product codes:

    0A48AXS820M
    0R48AMS410B

Same density and PMIC, but they changed the IC. Highlighted 1 is Samsung, 2 is Hynix. The last character is die type. For Samsung it's only B-Die, for Hynix it's M and A.

  • Forgive my ignorance but I can't say I follow. I just talked with a support rep in Ohio and he was stumped. But looking closer now I see the product codes and see the difference. So now I need search for the additional memory by the product code?

When I chatted with an assistant I was told the system would not support more than the 64GB memory but that's no the spec on the MSI site which says upto 256GB memory.

I just need the proper model number of the correct G.Skill memory….

I appreciate the assist and thought I had it with the ordered memory but things have changed over the years….

  • Mike, sorry for my ignorance but at this point I question if I can add additional 64GB set to this existing set. If so I'm at a loss as to which memory. If I try to search via product code I get nothing helpful. Using G. Skill's site I get after loading in motherboard, chip set, and model

    https://www.gskill.com/specification/165/396/1731653269/F5-6000J2836G32GX2-FX5-Specification

  • An online search results in this option https://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-6000MT-CL28-36-36-96-Desktop-Computer/dp/B0DX4WXDRZ?th=1

This doesn't list a product code so how do you know?

  • I also looked on Micro Center's site and talked with a support staff. I'm at a loss. This isn't essential as it's better than 200% faster than my other system but when you develop as many astro images that need the bias, darks, and individual filter frames the number could be several hundred frames in any given run. Most typically say 30 bias, 30 darks, then at least 6-8 hours data per filter so 400 second exposures would be 54 frames for red, green, blue, and luminance for a total of 276 frames including the bias and darks. Each frame is 42 MB, so 11,592 MBs in any given session. Make masters of the Bias and Daks can help in future calibrations if they are the same exposure and temperature.

Hence the want/need for additional memory. That would certainly help speed up calibrations and the creation of master frames so then I'd be working with 4-7 (if any narrowband images used) instead. Just explaining the desire for more memory.

64GB is just a spec we tested up to. The manufacturers specifications should be fine with the right kit.

Unfortunately the majority of people don't really understand memory and DDR4 was more forgiving, though you'd still run into these types of issues with the rev changes the manufacturers make. Are you able to go into a store and actually look or do you need to order online?

  • If I'm correct I can add the F5-6000J3040G32Gx2-FX5 kit to the existing memory? If so I have found those on Micro Center's site and will schedule a trip when confirmed as I'll be up that way anyway soon.

If they have that kit, with the same product code. On the PowerSpec side we verify all shipments from GSkill and they make us aware of component changes. On the retail side, it's hard to say if they'll still have that. Let me know if you can find it. If not, post back here, I'll send you an email and we'll figure something out.

    This should be the same…yes?

    G.Skill Flare X5 Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5-6000 PC5-48000 CL30 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit F5-6000J3040G32GX2-FX5 - Black

I'm sorry if I'm going in circles. I'm thoroughly confused on what to look for to be sure of compatibility. Where do I find the product code (0A48AXS8) via the website to be sure? Is there a way to verify before going to the store, a 2 hour drive for me?

You can't, you'd have to look at it in person. The product code will change without the part number changing. It's confusing.

Also, keep in mind 2DPC is harder on the memory controller. Default behavior it's going to drop your frequency to 3600MHz. You can manually overclock it from there, but getting up to 6000MHz is unlikely. It's an X3D though, it's not going to impact you much performance wise, outside of a memory benchmark.

  • Thanks Mike. Sounds like I should drop this idea of adding memory. As is, it's faster than previous systems I've had. Not complaining just something new to me. Never ran into this before so I've learned from this.

    Thanks for you time.

It's not new, it happened with DDR4. It's just that DDR5 is relatively immature. Personally, I like memory overclocking so I'm sticking to 1DPC configurations to try to push it. You shop for the best Die rather than a specific vendor. Let me see what I have. I'll send you an email Monday and we'll see what we can do.

  • Thanks again Mike, far more help than I could have expected.
