I just needed to see if this is the best for a $1000-ish gaming pc, looking for something compact, most upgrading in the hardware not the case fans, etc.

The 520 chipset on that motherboard does not support overclocking, so getting the 'X' variant of the 5600 does not make sense. Either get a 5600 non-X or upgrade to a 550 or 570 chipset. the 520 chipset is bottom of the line.
I prefer a better motherboard that a better CPU; the 5600 vs 5600X is a $30 difference and you can get a 550 chipset board instead of that bargain bin 520.
Which motherboard would you recommend, and could I have a link to it?
Well just pick a 550 chipset that's around $120, do you need wifi? Pick one that has that included because otherwise it is trouble to add later.
I got this B550. https://www.microcenter.com/product/0624552/b550m-a-prime-amd-am4-microatx-motherboard#tab-reviews
