adding on to a pre-built

If I have a pre-built pc with a ryzen 5, can I add a better CPU? or will it mess it all up. If I get a new one does It need to by ryzen or can I go intel?

What is the prebuilt spec? You would have to stay ryzen as the AMD motherboard cpu socket doesn't fit intel's cpu, and you might not be able to upgrade to the latest ryzen 6000 series chip if you have anything prior gen ryzen 5(incompatible socket AM4 vs AM5, ram ddr4 vs ddr5) . And PSU wattage, cooling would also be limiting factors
