My friend bought me a gift and I'm trying to make a return on it

My friend bought me a gift for early Christmas, but it seem too expensive for a gift so I wanted to see if I can make a return of it in-store. I do not have the receipt and was wondering if I could still make a return on it without asking my friend.

We would need some sort of proof of purchase then to be able to accept a return/exchange.

A receipt, or the microcenter account that the friend made the purchase in.

Do they need the whole login for the account?

Does the item have a serial number? If it has a serial number, that would serve as proof that it was purchased at a Micro Center location.
