My name is Ishan Samarasinghe and I’m on the business team at West Torrance High School’s robotics team in Torrance California! We are a hands-on organization dedicated to improving access to STEM education for students of all backgrounds. Not only are we committed to building robots and participating in competitions, but we are an entirely student-run, nonprofit organization. Every step of development from planning to execution is accomplished by the effort of our members. Our work culminated in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), which is a globally recognized contest. The goal of FRC is to challenge our team to build, design, program, and fund industrial-sized robots to compete in different, exciting games each year. It is a competition that introduces teams from around the world to the central value of FIRST: gracious professionalism.
Our priority is teaching a variety of skills to our members that will assist them in the future, accomplished through our programming, design, and business teams. The work microcenter does is inspiring and aligns with our organization’s goals. In order to afford our competitions, materials, transportation, and instruction for new members, we ask for your partnership. As the winners of the 2014 and 2017 LA Regionals, we have a history of success. By sponsoring our team, we’ll be able to fund this program and introduce our passion for robotics to more eager students. In the past we have been sponsored by companies such as John Deere, Raytheon, Apple,Torrance Education Foundation, and NASA. This summer, we are hoping to develop and use a new type of drivetrain so we can inspire students and push ourselves to win another regional. This drivetrain is called swerve, and it requires a lot of money, design, manufacturing, and programming. Currently, our shop consists of 4 old desktops and 3 older laptops. We are desperately in need of a technology update because our computers can barely run our cad software (Onshape), and we don't have enough laptops to provide for most of our programming division. Usually, we put the sponsor's name on the side panels of our robot. We aim to represent microcenter in the best way possible and look forward to discussing the terms to best suit your needs.
As a business team member at West High School, I will ensure that the money donated will directly be spent on the program, and will further the development of high school STEM innovation. Thank you so much for your time and consideration and feel free to reach out via email or phone if any questions or concerns arise. We will be more than happy to give more information about our organization and we cannot wait to hear back from you.
