Can my mobo with interface PCIe Gen 3 x 4 work with PCIe Gen 4 x 4 or PCIe Gen 5 x 4?
I am wanting to upgrade my M.2 / NVMe SSD into a bigger storage. My motherboard says the M.2 socket 3 with M Key supports PCIe 3.0 x 4 mode. Do M.2 NVMe SSDs with PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 x 4 run backward compatible with my mobo that supports PCIe Gen 3 x 4? Also I will be upgrading my HD to a bigger capacity SATA SSD. Would having a USB-C to PCIe NVMe SSD Tool-Free Enclosure to move data between my old and new storages make things easier? How does that work? I want to move most of my games that are currently on my HD to the new M.2 SSD and what's currently on my old M.2 SSD onto the new M.2 SSD.

Yes, it's backwards compatible. You will be limited by the speed. PCIe Gen3 x4 is roughly 4GB/s.
