Problems on restart with Powerspec G517
Hi!
I first bought a Powerspec G517 a month ago and was having issues with getting past the Windows initial boot up prompts. I would put in some language info and check for updates and then it would say it needs to restart to finish set up. But then it just never booted up and stayed in a 'sleep' state with the lights and fans on but nothing else. I couldn't solve this problem so I took it back to Microcenter and got a new one, thinking the first one just had a corrupt Windows or something.
Lo and behold, this current one was also having the same issue. I ended up getting past the initial Windows set up and was finally in my PC. It works well and I am satisfied with the performance but it still has this issue on restarts/boot up. It keeps going into this weird dormant state where the PC turns off but the lights/fans are still going and it doesn't ever boot back up. The only fix is to manually shut it down via the power button or unplugging it. Even then, after completely shutting it down, it will still sometimes go back into this state upon boot up and need to be unplugged again.
Like I said, it works well once you're in it but it is very worrying that it keeps doing this. Are there some diagnostic tests I could run or settings I could change to fix this? I'm hoping to avoid replacing the machine again or doing a clean windows.
Thanks!

Are you running multiple monitors?
-
It certainly seems sleep related. Lets see if it ties into fast startup.
- Windows + R and type: Control
- Hardware and Sound - Power Options - Change what the power buttons do
- Click 'Change Settings that are current unavailable'.
- Uncheck 'Turn on Fast Startup'
- Save Changes and reboot.
Please list any devices you've added to the system or that were added at the store. Including USB devices.
-
I actually did try the unchecking the fast startup already and didn't notice a change.
As for devices, all I've really plugged in is my Mayflash Controller Adapter and mouse/keyboard that were provided.
-
Does the issue occur without the Mayflash Controller attached?
-
Yes, and it was happening before I ever plugged the Mayflash in too
-
I can look at it on one of ours tomorrow, but we do rebooter and sleep cycles extensively in the testing. We haven't had any issues with this model. There has to be some other factor here given that you've gotten two systems. Try disabling ULPS on the Radeon card and see if the issue still occurs. Also, make sure you're on the latest driver:
Note: Update and test the driver first. Updating the driver resets what the program changes in the registry.

I wanted to update you on my testing this morning. I was able to pull up your purchase, I'm testing on the exact same build configuration. No issues with the initial update and restart. I shut the system down several times without issue. Currently running a cycle of 1000 reboots. I'm on 88 with no issues so far.
Just to delve more into what you're experiencing, it's peculiar and comes across at separate issues. The shutdown where the lights stay on, sounds like a GPU driver issue. The warm boot issues you're describing though, the driver wouldn't be a factor on POST. Warm boot is most commonly a RAM issue, though a RAM issue wouldn't likely cause the incomplete shutdown. A few more questions.
- Did you use the new power cable included with the unit?
- When the system fails to reboot, what are the debug LEDs on the bottom of the board indicating?
-
I tried that ULPS zip file and did a restart and doesn't look like it made a difference unfortunately. I don't know if this helps but here's a clip of what happens when I restart: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvSiRDzYqhA
It continues like this indefinitely, the only change I've noticed is if I leave it on overnight for example, the blinking red light on top of case will turn off.
To answer some of your questions
- Yes, using only cables provided.
- I don't see anything lighting up on the debug LEDs
-
Thanks for the video. The Debug LED's are below the card, I couldn't see anything. Question. The next time that happens, wait about a minute, and then try toggling the caps lock light. Does it work?

That makes a little more sense. So the system is rebooting, you're just getting no video output afterwards. That ties together with the incomplete shutdown.
Run this:
It'll wipe out the Radeon drivers entirely. Reboot. Test the shutdown functionality and see if there issues exist on the basic display driver. If not, reinstall the driver and see if the issue returns.

Hi, sorry this took a couple days to get to.
Unfortunately, this didn't do the trick. Went through the AMD Cleanup, verified that I did not have AMD drivers in Device Manager, and still had issues on restarts. I went ahead and reinstalled the Radeon drivers and the issue is still persisting. Any thoughts or new solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The next time you shutdown, go to an elevated command prompt and type: shutdown /s /t 00
See if it shuts down properly if we cut out Modern Standby.
-
Yes, that works well. However, shutdowns via start menu have always worked just fine. It's really just restarts that are the problem.
-
How about: shutdown /r /t 00
Sorry, may have mixed that up with something else I'm working on.
-
No worries! Still having the same issue with the elevated cmd prompt restart though.

Alright, we're locked in on hardware now. GPU, cable or monitor. I have a few questions and things to try.
- Are you using HDMI or DP?
- The next time it happens, disconnect and reconnect the cable. If it's DP, connect to another port.
- Can you test another cable?
- Can you test another monitor or TV?
- What model is your monitor?
-
@PowerSpec_MikeW
1. DP
2. All 3 GPU DP ports have the same issue
3. Tried an HDMI and no luck
4. Unfortunately no, but the monitor/cable works just fine with my work laptop and during normal use of the PC so can't imagine it would help all that much
5. Acer LCD B7 series-B247Y
Should I try connecting to the HMDI on the motherboard? -
Won't help unfortunately, that CPU doesn't have an APU for video. It's not functional. It's either a bad GPU or an issue with that monitor. I think our best course of action now is to replicate it in the store and if it still does it replace the GPU or system.
