recommended backup software for Windows
I currently use Acronis software to backup my 2 computers, but i don't like its interface - and its tech support cost me several hours of frustration. What backup software do people use?

This will depend on what you are backing up to! It is usually recommended to use the software of the drive that you are using. What external drive are you using here?

currently i backup 2 pcs: one to both an internal HD and a portable HD, and the other to that portable HD. surely there must be a cheap reliable app that'll handle both?

In all honesty you could just use the built in Windows Backup tool. If you have have a Samsung drive Samsung Magician is pretty reliable as well. Acronis is generally the most frequented tool here from what I am aware of outside of this

it appears that the MS too only backs up to the cloud.
i think a salesperson at my local MC store said they use FAB'S
