Firmware Issues with WD NVMe drives and 24H2
Greetings,
Be advised there is a known issue with some WD and Sandisk NVMe drives that can cause instability and OS corruption with the 24H2 update. See this article for more information:
https://support-en.sandisk.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/51469
Impacted Drives and required firmware versions:
WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe SSD 2TB | WDBBDL0020BNC, WDS200T3X0E | 731130WD |
---|---|---|
WD_BLACK SN770M NVMe SSD 2TB | WDBDNH0020BBK, WDS200T3X0G | 731130WD |
WD Blue SN580 NVMe SSD 2TB | WDBWMY0020BBL, WDS200T3B0E | 281050WD |
WD Blue SN5000 NVMe SSD 2TB | WDBS3F0020BNC, WDS200T4B0E | 291020WD |
SanDisk Extreme M.2 NVMe SSD 2TB | SDSSDX3N-2T00 | 731130WD |
Solution:
Update the firmware with the WD Dashboard app: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/31759/~/download%2C-install%2C-test-drive-and-update-firmware-using-western-digital
We've pushed an automatic firmware update through Windows Update for all PowerSpec models with the SN580 2TB drive. You'll see a prompt stating the PC needs to be restarted to finish setting up the WD SN580 2TB drive. This indicates the extension driver installed, which replaces disk.inf. This extension driver creates a firmware update software component after restarting. Then a driver targeted at the new software component will download. It'll flash 1050 firmware into the second firmware slot on the drive and set it active. From here, you're all set. On the next reboot, the extension driver will be replaced by the original disk.inf inbox driver, as the HWID will no longer be valid after it updates to reflect the new firmware.

Can you confirm B944 is also affected? Mine has the drive in question, became unstable and then bricked after the 24H2 upgrade. Windows repair/restore/recover /boot to safe mode/re-install keeping user data all fail, only thing that works is the command prompt so thankfully able to copy contents of C: to USB.

The B944 is affected. The 24H2 update should be blocked per Microsoft. We have a firmware update pending for Windows Update. ETA is 12/31 for 24H2.

@PowerSpec_MikeW I just got an update for the 24H2. I'm rocking with the G448. How do I find out if I need to download this firmware?
-
It's automatic, but if you want to check it there are a few places. Check your update history, and you'll see a Micro Electronics Inc. Firmware update if it downloaded. Check device manager, Disks, double click the driver, properties, hardware IDs. The end of the first like will show you the firmware version.
