Upgrade gpu first or cpu

Hi all I'm currently rocking a 5700x3d and a 7800xt and am looking to improve my gaming experience just curious if the 5700x3d can handle a 7900xtx or should I upgrade cpu first to 7800x3d or 9800x3d if I can find one available? Any help would be amazing thanks

  • Hello!

The short answer is: It depends on what resolution you're gaming on and if you're playing GPU or CPU demanding games. (More details below)

In general with your current CPU and GPU you mentioned above, if you're at 1080p or 1440p resolution then your GPU is being under utilized and you should upgrade your CPU. At high resolutions (like 4K), a GPU upgrade would probably give you the best boost.
Here is a great resource for getting a general idea: https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/

To tell if the games you play are more GPU or CPU demanding, you can search the web for the answer on that specific game, or just run the game the way you'd normally play and open Task Manager and watch your CPU and GPU utilization to see which the game is stressing more. If you're playing more CPU demanding games, a CPU upgrade is probably the best choice.

    I hope this helps!

  • Yeah I play a mix of multiplayer and single player games at 1440p and have noticed a tint bit of cpu over utilization so I guess via your answer my guess would be cpu most likely
