Microphone and Line-In Problems with Dell Vostro 3470

We are having problems with the line-in port, and the microphone to the microphone port of our Dell Vostro 3470. We need to connect and make recordings from our digital piano to the line-in port, and the microphone to the microphone port of the Vostro. Neither of these are working. We cannot make any recordings because the recording software will not load when it cannot find a microphone. We've tried any number of things to get it to work with no success. For one thing, the instructions "how to setup a microphone for Windows 10" appears to be incorrect. How do we configure a microphone?
