best USB hubs

I was wondering what usb hub would be recommended for connecting external harddrives and my iphone to a 2011 macbook. I want to move mostly photos but also movies, so the files would be small jpegs up to 4 gb files. I know that some USB hubs are powered through the laptop and others through a power source. Please advise. My laptop only has one working USB port.

Do you plan on keeping these devices connected all the time or would you just be using these ports periodically?

sporadically. Though the phone would be connected frequently the length of time is typically only while doing file transfers. Though I use the hotspot on the iphone often.
