How big of a video card can I upgrade to in my Dell XPS 8500?
I have a Dell XPS 8500 purchased in 2012. It's a very good computer, very reliable, and fast. I'd like to upgrade the video card but the card recommended by Dell isn't much more powerful than mine.

From what I understand your main issue is keeping your Wattage below PSU max. For Nvidia your best bet would be to go with the GT 1030.

If you can run a DxDiag and let us know what your processor, current GPU (Display), and RAM size I can get a better understanding. It would also be great to know what your max wattage is.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3450 CPU @ 3.10GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.1GHz
Card name: AMD Radeon HD 7500 Series
Memory: 32768MB RAM

Welcome to the forum @HalfaClue. It looks like your system can support a 9.5 inch graphics card, so anything around that size or smaller should fit. As stated by @Dains_zoo, it's extremely important to make sure you have the power overhead to support a faster GPU. Luckily most modern GPU's are more efficient and should draw less power than what you are likely using, but it's best to be safe and determine your PSU limitations first before we make any recommendations. If you have the service tag, you might be able to plug that into Dell's website for a detailed part list of your system: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04.

@HalfaClue thank you for that information. Looks to be a 460W PSU:
With that in mind, I would strongly advise against going with anything higher than an RTX 2060, and even that might be pushing it. A GTX 1660 Super would be a safe bet. They are not too long, and would easily out perform the Radeon 7570 that you have.
