what kind of computer do I need to run folding@home?

Just to run the software and participate, you don't need anything fancy. F@H has information on system requirements you can refer to here:

Just keep in mind that F@H will run your PC at full load unless you configure it not to. That means more heat, and potentially shorter lifespan on the hardware and possible failure. That kind of thing is rare, but there's always that chance.

hi I understand folding@home  depends on GPU cycles than CPU?
 is folding@home making a difference in research or other discoveries?

The simple answer is yes, Folding@Home is making a difference, right now its resources are directed mostly at Covid-19 but it has been used for many other diseases to make advancements as well. It can utilize both CPU and GPU resources.

All that said, I think you'd be better off asking these questions in the main thread as our users there are quite knowledgeable and can give you more details than I'm able to.
