Dysfunctional trackpad in brand new 2020 Mac Air

I just bought a new laptop. Although the trackpad worked fine for a few days, it is now doing a double click every time I do a single click. This means, for example, that I can't move any files around my desktop into folders or highlight text. When I try to pick up a file to move to somewhere else, you can hear the trackpad doing 2 clicks instead of one and it previews or opens the file instead of selecting it to be moved. Help?

The first two things I'd try would be clearing your PRAM and SMC.

Both of those are pretty easy to do and can often resolve odd issues like this, though they're not a guaranteed fix. Have you tested an external mouse with the mac, and if so does it have the same issue? That would help narrow it down if it's the trackpad itself or if it's something within the operating system.
