ASRock B450 pro4 with the Ryzen 3 3200g

Getting a comparability warning on PCPartpicker. Looking to pair the B450 with Ryzen 3 3200G. Says BIOS needs to be updated with prior processor. Is this accurate? what if you don't have an old CPU laying around?

  • Hello @TWM

This is correct as the 3rd Gen Processors were released after the B450 Chipset came out.  Some B450 motherboards MAY need a BIOS update to work with a 3rd Gen Ryzen Processor.  The common way of updating the BIOS is using an old generation and installing the updated BIOS.  Some motherboards, but not all, have a BIOS Flash option that can install a new BIOS without a processor.

You can try contacting AMD to see if they can send an older processor for the BIOS update, I do believe they have a program for doing this.

We do have a service at Micro Center for updating the BIOS for $29.99.
  • Ah ok thank you. I will check out those options. Otherwise I will just buy the MSI board for $100 I guess. That seems to be compatible
  • I bought a similar board, the ASRock B450M Steel Legend and can confirm that the BIOS was already updated to be Zen 2 compatible. They also released a new BIOS update to make it compatible with Zen 3, as a matter of fact.
That said, whatever B450 board you end up buying, chances are it's already good to go for Zen 2.
