Dell XPS 9500 vs. Precision 5540 for 3D CAD and Rendering

I'm an industrial designer, doing 3D CAD and rendering (solidworks, keyshot, adobe CC) needing a new work laptop and I'm trying to decide between the Dell XPS 15 9500 (https://www.microcenter.com/product/623604/dell-xps-15-9500-156-laptop-computer---silver) and the Dell Precision 5540 (https://www.microcenter.com/product/615131/dell-precision-5540-mobile-workstation-156-laptop-computer---gray?ob=1).

Looking for recommendations on which one of the two I should go with. There is only 1 Precision 5540 available in open box, so I need to figure it out quickly.

I know the Precision 5540 has a better graphics card and more RAM, but I'm wanting to make sure I'm not overlooking anything on the XPS 9500 that could sway me that way.

Thanks!

  • Most of the tasks that you mentioned are going to be GPU focused. The NVIDIA Quadro T1000 is more set for professional workloads, however, both GPUs have 4GB of memory but the 5540 has more RAM and more SSD capacity. Since the GPUs are so similar, I'd recommend going with the other spec that you think you need. Personal preference would be to go with more storage and RAM.
The CPU generation difference is minimal. Hardly anything changed between these two chips.
Hope this input helped! Let me know if you have more questions!
