Is it possible to return a gift for store credit without a gift receipt?

I received a gift that, unfortunately, I already own. I'd like to return/exchange it for something I can use, but I'd hate to have to go to this person, and have to ask for the receipt, essentially telling them their gift was useless to me haha...

Greetings. You would need a gift receipt to get a return like this made, otherwise in most cases, a return like that is going to be returned to the original form of payment used.
