Hello @otiemac and thanks for posting on the Microcenter Community Forum. The motherboard and cpu (ex., Ryzen 5 3600, etc.) you mentioned is fine to run a lInux distro or OS.

Ubuntu is easier to use in regards to learning Linux. Check out Linux Mint as well.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • @otiemac as TSTDavey confirmed your motherboard and CPU will run any Linux distribution. The graphics cards can add a challenge to a Linux build but most with work some requiring more effort in configuring than others. CentOS 7 is good if you are looking for a distribution that is used in many commercial applications or solutions though it has an end of life June 2024 (CentOS 8 already ended) and the model they are moving to is making vendors and developers review what distribution to use in the future. They will most likely stay with a CentOS (RedHat) based version to avoid having to rework maintenance scripts and system admin coding. Ubuntu or Linux Mint are favored for desktop UI usage and tend to be more friendly to a user that using interested in running the applications and not needing to dig into the system. Linux can run on a thin system build as little as 1G RAM though 8Gb RAM would be wise to start with. This will make for running several applications and services at a time smoothly.
