Radeon 6900 "We detected a driver timeout has occurred on your system

Options

We just built a computer (see components below). The computer will browse the web, run YouTube videos without a problem, etc. but as soon as we start any game (only tried games on Steam and Riot) it throws the "detected a driver timeout" error and locks up. Have to ctrl+alt+delete to sign-out as the computer just crashes out of the game and freezes up.

If we unplug the GPU power supplies and plug the monitor into the integrated graphics card on the mother board everything works fine. We are guessing that means there is something with the GPU and/or the associated drivers?

We have used the AMD clean up utility to remove drivers and re-install them. We have tried clean installs on both drivers AMD has listed for the 6900 (Adrenalin 21.6.1 and the recommended Adrenalin 21.5.2) and continue to get the same error regardless of the drivers. This is our first PC build and we have used Driver Booster 8.5 to check that all the other drivers were up to date (it says they are).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The PC consists of the following (all purchased through MicroCenter):

Rx 6900 XT Sapphire Nitro+

Intel i7-10700K

MSI MPG Z490 gaming wifi edge (BIOS version 7C79v17)

TridentZ DDR4 -3200 8GBx2

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1tb

EVGA 850 Supernova GA

    Have you made sure all other drivers are installed such as the Chipset driver? And it is up to date?

    If you open Device Manager, does it show under display adapters the driver version for the AMD GPU? It may have an option to rollback the driver there. I would try this as the issue could just be the specific driver for your GPU.

    @TS_JosephF I have tried multiple clean installs of at least three different AMD drivers for the GPU. The card has actually never worked, it is a new build. When I install either of the two newest AMD drivers (including the recommended driver) I get the same error "Device not started (amdwddmg)." When I click on the event it gives me this:

    Device PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_73BF&SUBSYS_440E1DA2&REV_C0\6&76cb1a&0&00000008 had a problem starting.

    Driver Name: oem35.inf

    Class Guid: {4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    Service: amdwddmg

    Lower Filters:

    Upper Filters:

    Problem: 0x0

    Problem Status: 0xC00000E5

    When I tried an older version of the AMD driver the error was "Device not started amdkmdag."

    I have seen some older threads discussing similar issues, but can't find a solution.

    @Leigh

    These seems like it could be an issue with the card itself. One way to know for sure is trying this same GPU in another PC to see if the same error happens.

    You can also try installing a different AMD GPU in this system to see if it will accept the drivers installed. If it works, then it would indicate the GPU itself is likely the problem. If another AMD GPU still does not work, it could be an issue with Windows itself or a separate hardware issue.

    @TS_JosephF I don't have another PC. I did buy everything from MC (all purchased this month). If I take it into the local MC will they check it for me?

    If you bought the GPU in the last 30 days then you are welcome to return it. As for testing it. You would need to bring in the PC fully assembled and we can complete diagnostics for 39.99.

    Of course if we did determine that the GPU is bad, you can speak to the store manager about holding another one for you if it is not in stock at the time. Although I cannot guarantee this from here, with the GPU shortage and all they should be able to help you get a replacement if you need to return this (potentially) defective one.

    Turns out it was a bad GPU. Unfortunately had to replace it with a 6800 red dragon that was all they had unless I wanted to go up to $2,600 which I don't have. Thanks for your help. Dropped the new one in and it works like a charm.
