What should I upgrade first in this build
Our sons old pc was a piece of crap. We want him to have a PC at his moms house too. So we were wondering what we should upgrade first on the old PC. The micro centers custom pc builder did not have that old of parts so we built it on PCpartpicker.com. This would help a bunch! Our son said we should upgrade the RAM first but i just wanted to ask someone that knew more about this kinda stuff. Thank you once again. oh also the stuff that is not on the list is right here:
parts:
CPU: I5-3340
RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600 mhz
GPU: XFX RX 580 8GB
PSU: ThermalTake 500W 80+ White
REAL motherboard: dell 084J0R
HDD: WDC WD2002FYPS-02W3B0
Case: some old dell inspiron.

I'd say probably upgrade the ram as the Intel Core i5-3340 can handle the RX 580. Increasing the ram capacity to 16gb will help the system function smoother and will probably increase the fps decently. Although after ram, the CPU could probably upgraded to a Intel Core i7-3770K for peak performance.

The really big problem here is the hard drive. Replacing that with an ssd, or adding an ssd and making it the boot drive will be a huge improvement. Second would be adding some memory.

A 1tb or a 500gb?

I would look and see how much storage space and you are using on your current drive, that is a good way to make a determination on what size drive you'd need.
