Coming Soon: The Next Generation of AMD Graphics Cards!
Written by Sean Mekinda
Yesterday's AMD conference was focused entirely on their new lineup of graphics cards, revealing that the new AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and AND Radeon RX 7900 XT would both be built on the groundbreaking AMD RDNA 3 architecture, the first AMD GPUs with a chiplet design. They're also coming very soon: both cards are releasing December 13th!
AMD RDNA 3 is designed with efficiency in mind, delivering up to 54% more performance-per-watt over AMD RDNA 2, so you can get even more power from less wattage. Additionally, the new lineup includes up to 96 new unified compute units, second-generation AMD Infinity Cache, and up to 24GB of GDDR6 RAM, meaning you'll be seeing up to 1.7x better performance on select 4K games over AMD RDNA 2 architecture. Also updated is ray tracing, taking up-to a 1.8x leap over the previous RDNA 2.
And if you've got an ultra-high-end monitor, don't worry - MD Radeon RX 7900 can handle it thanks to DisplayPort 2.1, enabling 4K gaming at a massive 480Hz and 8K gaming at an absolutely killer 165Hz.
Here are some of highlights, straight from AMD:
- AMD RDNA 3 Architecture – Featuring an advanced chiplet design, new compute units and second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology, AMD RDNA 3 architecture delivers up to 54% more performance per watt than the previous-generation AMD RDNA 2 architecture6. New compute units share resources between rendering, AI and raytracing to make the most effective use of each transistor for faster, more efficient performance than the previous generation.
- Chiplet Design – The world’s first gaming GPU with a chiplet design delivers up to 15% higher frequencies7 at up to 54% better power efficiency. It includes the new 5nm 306mm2 Graphics Compute Die (GCD) with up to 96 compute units that provide the core GPU functionality. It also includes six of the new 6nm Memory Cache Die (MCD) at 37.5mm2, each with up to 16MB of second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology.
- Ultra-Fast Chiplet Interconnect – Unleashing the benefits of second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology, the new chiplets leverage AMD Infinity Links and high-performance fanout packaging to deliver up to 5.3TB/s of bandwidth.
- Expanded Memory and Wider Memory Bus – To meet the growing requirements of today’s demanding titles, the new graphics cards feature up to 24GB of high-speed GDDR6 memory running at 20Gbps over a 384-bit memory bus.
- Dedicated AI Acceleration and Second-Generation Raytracing – New AI instructions and increased AI throughput deliver up to 2.7X more performance than the previous AMD RDNA 2 architecture8, while second-generation raytracing technology delivers up to 1.8X more performance than the previous generation9.
- DisplayPort™ 2.1 Support – The industry’s only high-end gaming graphics cards to support DisplayPort 2.1 technology with UHBR 13.5, offering up to 54Gbps of display link bandwidth and enabling high-refresh 4K (up to 480Hz) or 8K (up to 165Hz) gaming on next-gen displays.
- New AMD Radiance Display™ Engine – Provides 12 bit-per-channel color for up to 68 billion colors and higher refresh rate displays compared to AMD RDNA 2 architecture and includes support for DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1a.
- High-Refresh Gaming – DisplayPort 2.1 provides increased display bandwidth compared to DisplayPort 1.410, with the ability to support up to 900Hz, 480Hz and 165Hz refresh rates for 1440p, 4K and 8K displays, respectively.
- Dual Media Engine – Supports simultaneous encode or decode streams up to 8K60 for HEVC and supports AV1 encode11, delivering up to 1.8X higher engine frequency than AMD RDNA 2 architecture12.

is camping even still a thing. ive done it for 6800xt launch 2 years ago lmao.
wouldn't mind myself a 7900xtx, but i gather there would be a more specific discussion thread closer to dec 13th launch
-
For the 4090 launch I showed up at the store around 7am the morning of and was 15th in line. By the time the doors opened at 9am there were 50 people or more. I'd suggest if nothing else just getting there early the day of instead of the night before. This may be highly store dependent though, I was at the Marietta, GA location. Best of luck to you in getting one on launch day!

AMD is looking very promising right now. I was always hesitant about getting an AMD GPU because I've always heard that they've had driver issues, hopefully that won't be the case. Now I'm wondering whether to get an RTX 3000 series card or wait for this to launch.

This AMD is the best lineup against NVidia in price and a bit behind in performance but its still awesome
-
Interesting that they put December 13th as a Wednesday...my calendar says it's a Tuesday....
-
Hopefully they stack up nicely in terms of performance and price. Haven't had an AMD GPU since the R9 290x.
-
These new GPU's are lookin saucy!
-
"wednesday the 13th"
they mean tuesday of december right?
-
I will be one of those guys in line at the st Louis store. Last piece I need for my new pc build.
-
I'm camping for a 7900xtx in Ohio...should I go to the Columbus store?
-
Closest one to me is St louis, 69 miles away. Next closest according to their site is 237 miles away. I will stick with the St Louis store ;)
-
Sooo... will this card have a more successful launch that the previous one earlier this year?
-
Is camping for a GPU at Microcenter in December in Ohio even a thing? The weather isn’t looking good for Monday night the 12th here in Cleveland …
-
Hope these new High End AMD GPUs are worth, the price point seems good 😄
-
Any news or details on microcenter release day for 7900 cards? Which ones they may have?
-
@Pappagreenjeans I hope you're right
-
When will AIB's be allowed to tell what their models are exactly? I assume PowerColor will have a Liquid Devil edition but they don't have anything but a generic picture of a 3 fan card on their news page for the 7000 series.
-
Im so hyped, there so much cheaper than NVIDIAS overpriced garbage
-
Hey @Trustym2
That's my bad - misread my calendar. Thanks, updated!
-
Hi @CHRONOBODI
You're absolutely right, I've got it corrected!
-
I'm looking forward to seeing what other GPUs for the 7000 series end up looking like
-
excited, hope there's decent stock at Westbury
-
Would absolutely love to get one of these cards ngl
-
@MicroCenterOfficial any info for the 7900XTX release? More specifically the Brentwood Mo store? I plan on being there early and camping the front door but there hasn't been a peep about the new release and all they say when I called was watch the community boards. Well nothing being said so not sure whats up.
-
I will be there in line at Marrietta store. Drive n from Knoxville Tennessee. 7900xtx
-
We need concrete launch info for St. Davids! i heard rumors of them doing the weird QR code thing, no one has officially confirmed. not only that. but also have zero clue, on what cards will even be offered. basically we are lining up at a shot of buying a card we may not even want, or is an expensive AIB model
-
Still no info on what models will be in stock. Before the nvidia releases they listed all their cards and models, there is nothing for AMD. I am not wasting my time driving to the store for nothing and will buy on Newegg/Amazon instead if this is how you guys are going to play this game.
-
Any chance someone at the St. Davids store in PA, or anyone from microcenter at this point, can fill in which AIB's will be available alongside the Reference rx 7900 xtx boards? Trying to get information from chat support is like trying to draw blood from a stone. Now I know you guys like to work with the hype train to drive up sales, at the same time though have pity for the working class man giving up a serious portion of his day to camp out on your doorstep.
-
Exactly. They want people to drive to the store for what I am guessing is a low stock. Before the 4080 release, all the models were on their website and they also had a ton of them. So most likely low stock for AMD since nothing is revealed. I am assuming only reference cards with no AIB's, like rumors were suggesting. They want people to line up like peasants at their store so they will buy other stuff for making the long trip. Nice bait & switch tactics.
