My son is going off to a boarding school in Sept and isn't allowed to bring his PC. You guys helped a ton when he was deciding on his build last year about this time, and he has really enjoyed his system, so figured I'd come back to the forum for advice on the laptop question, too. I believe his school uses google classroom, so I could do an inexpensive chromebook, but I know he'd go crazy if he's not able to play some video games with his friends back home when he has downtime. So I want to get him something that will function well for his school stuff for the next two years that he can also game on. I was looking at the Dell G15 5510 15.6" Gaming Laptop, which would seem to not really be a step down from his PC in terms of components:
But I'm hoping to keep at at or under $1500 all in (tax, microsoft home/student, etc). Any suggestions on other gaming laptops that have essentially the same specs but may be a little less so I can make my budget? Thanks y'all!
Just noticed this Lenovo that has similar specs but Ryzen instead of Intel: https://www.microcenter.com/product/637182/Legion_5_15_156%22_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Blue;_AMD_Ryzen_7_5800H_32GHz_Processor;_NVIDIA_GeForce_RTX_3060_6GB_GDDR6;_16GB_DDR4-3200_RAM;_1TB_Solid_St
And there is a factory refurbished Lenovo Legion 5 w/intel: https://www.microcenter.com/product/632766/lenovo-legion-5-15imh05h-156-gaming-laptop-computer-factory-refurbished-dark-moss
Wondering what the risks are of buying "factory refurbished". Any thoughts on this? I'd love to save the money and go this route, as I'm not sure how responsible my kid will be with the computer...
Greetings, which Micro Center store are you nearest to? That would help us make recommendations of in-stock products. As for refurbished, it will have all the form, fit and function of a like new product. I would take a look at our information on refurbished at https://community.microcenter.com/kb/articles/397-what-does-refurbished-mean
Thanks Ian! I will read up on what refurbished means--I appreciate that. I live near downtown Atlanta, and we bought his desktop from the Duluth store. Any suggestions are welcomed and thank you again!
I would take a look at this one at your current price point for a new laptop:
