Radeon Rx 6900 XT video outputs not working when extra 6 pins are powered
We got the Sapphire Nitro Special Edition 6900 (fans and RGB). It has two 6+2 pins to power the GPU and a 6 pin to power the fans and lights (I think, not sure what the 6 pins are for but they seem to be the problem). When we power only the two 6+2 everything works great with the video output, but the fans and RGB on the GPU are off. When we power the extra 6 pins, the fans and RGB turn on, but the video card quits working (more specifically the HDMI and displayport on the mother board quit working). We have three VGAs on the EVGA 850 PSU powering the three cords individually. If we unplug the 6 pins, everything is fine again with the video outputs, but the lights and fan on the GPU are off. When I power up the 6 pin again the fans and lights on the GPU work, but the video outputs to the monitor all quit working. No clue, would love any help.

Greetings. Is this the card you are referring to? https://www.microcenter.com/product/632471/sapphire-technology-amd-radeon-rx-6900-xt-nitro-overclocked-triple-fan-16gb-gddr6-pcie-40-graphics-card
From what I am seeing, it should require 2 8-pin connectors. You are using 8-pin (or 6+2) connectors in both spots?
-
Ian,
Thanks, this is our first build so it could be something obvious we just are not getting. It is actually this version. I am using 6+2 connectors in both spots. I am also using the 6 pins of a 6+2 in the third plug on the GPU.
The model I have has an additional 6 pins right next to the two 8 pins (you can see them clearly in the second picture of the unit in the link above). When I power up the 2 8 pins the HDMI on my mother board works, but the fans and lights on the GPU do not. When I plug the 6 portion of a 6+2 into the additional (third power connector) on the GPU the lights and fans turn on and work but the HDMI on my motherboard does not.

Can you take a picture of how it is connected and post it here?
-
Here is a picture.

@Leigh just chiming in. What power supply do you have? Also the RX 6900 XT should have a 8 Pin + 8 pin + 6pin for max power.
-
TSTDavey,
Thanks, we are running this power supply.
-
@Leigh Okay thanks. What happens when you do a 6+2 (8pin) + 6+2 (8pin) + 6pin molex connections to the graphic card?
-
I don't have a six pin, only the ones that came with the PSU. I could buy one tomorrow and see if that does it?
-
@TSTDavey I am using two PCI-E 8(6+2) - Pin x1's and one PCI-E 8(6+2) - Pin x2 and letting the extra (6+2) dangle in the box. That was the suggestion of someone I spoke with at the store. Again, I would be happy to buy a six pin tomorrow if you think it is worth it.
-
@Leigh The EVGA Supernova should have 6 (6+2) pin connectors. Check the power wiring for the PSU. You should have additional 6 pin molex wire connector.
If you don't have it something is missing from that PSU. Did you purchase the PSU from MC and when was it purchased?
-
@TSTDavey I purchased everything from MC and all within the last week to 10 days. The back of my box shows the following:
-
@Leigh use the extra 6pin from the 6+2 dangling in the tower.
-
@Leigh Hmmm only 3 (6+2) connectors. Okay, still use the extra 6 pin that is not being used so your card should have 8 + 8 + 6.
-
@TSTDavey I have three power cords for this coming out of the PSU to the GPU. I have tried all combinations using the two 8(6+2) pin x1 in the 8 pins and 6 pins from the 8(6+2) pin x2 cord. I have also used the 8(6+2) pin x2 to power both the 8 pin and the 6 pin on the GPU. Whenever there is power to the 6 pins regardless of my combination of cords the lights and fan on the GPU work, but the HDMI quits working.
-
@TSTDavey I mean the HDMI on the motherboard (MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WIFI) quits working when there is power to the 6 pins on the GPU.
-
@TSTDavey Sorry I have to quit on this for the night, but will be back tomorrow to follow any instructions I find from you all.
-
@Leigh okay the card should take 8 + 8 +6. If the HDMi quits working it could be a defective card. With the 8 + 8 + 6 connections do you at least get video with the Displayport? You may need to update the GPU driver to fix HDMI issue. Was the GPU also purchased from MC?
-
@TSTDavey Everything was purchased at MC. It was our first build and friends recommended working with MC for this reason. I can have my kids update the GPU driver and see if that works, but I really have to bail out tonight. Thank you very very much.

Hello @Leigh!
Please let us know when you can continue troubleshooting. If all options fail, you are welcome to bring the PC into service for diagnostics.
-
@TSTristan I am jammed up with work today, but can trouble shoot at 12:00 CST on Friday 6/25 or I am happy to take it into the local MC.
-
Sure thing, please respond again when you're available or you can bring it by the store.

@TSTristan @TSTDavey We have the above issue resolved, thank goodness. Now a new problem. We have gone to AMD and downloaded the driver for the GPU and every time they play a game 30 seconds to 1 minute in they get an "AMD software detected that a driver timeout has occurred on your system."
We tried to remove the driver and reinstall. Started the computer in safemode and used the AMD clean up utility to remove the driver. Restarted then reinstalled the driver again and the same error keeps happening. We took a screen shot and included the error from Riot so you could see both. I am happy to take the unit into my local MC, do I just need to set up an appointment?

Wanted to close this out. Turns out it was a bad GPU. Unfortunately had to replace it with a 6800 red dragon that was all they had at my local MC, unless I wanted to go up to $2,600 which I don't have. Thanks for your help. Dropped the new one in and it works like a charm.

Hello, I am glad to hear there has been a resolution to this!
