Some simple questions about buying computers

1. If the item is not on display do I have to ask clerk ?
The next two are from things I've read in reviews. I would rather know up front so that I don't pressure the store clerks.
- According to one review, if you ask you are allowed to go to tech support and boot the computer to make sure everything is fine.
- Also a review said that they bought a hard drive at the same time, they would install it for free. Is that true.
- If they do charge do you void your warrantee if you do it yourself. ( I've done it many times, just that "she who must be obeyed" will ffeak if I do it to a new computer. )
