How can I fix my gtx 980?

I’m buying this pc from my uncle today and it has a broken graphics card. Me and him have tried fixing it but can’t figure it out. I put my graphics card in it and it runs fine, but I with the 980 it blacks out when you open a game and you have to restart it. The fans also ramp up super loud. He has reapplied thermal paste, I have tried Msi afterburner and neither of them work. I have ran out of ideas so I decided to see if anyone knows what to do before I go and buy a graphics card for it at a time like this.

Are you certain this is a hardware issue? I know you tested another card but it could be a driver related problem. When swapping the GPUs are you performing a clean install of the drivers? I would start there and try and rule out any possible software/driver problems.

@Ian @TS_JosephF i have brought the hard drive to an IT worker who tested it and told me that it is flat out a dead card. i told my uncles brother about it and he said he messed with his hardware alot and messed it up. i totally believe him and i knew it before anyways but i still bought it because he said if it has problems he would pay me back. i will now be finding a new graphics card. thank you!

Hang on, it works until you start up a game? That is not a flat out dead graphics card. That is a card that has some issue that may be hardware but may be just software. I would double check that reapplied thermal paste job. Perhaps the cooler was not reseated completely.
