Intel 12700KF in PowerSpec G440 Temp Issues
Hey all,
I am about to drop some money on a new AIO to try and solve this, but I figured I might as well post here to see if anybody has some advice. I also posted this just in the general forum, but I think it should probably go here to get the most exposure, so I apologize for the double post.
I purchased the G440 from MicroCenter in October and have only recently begun filling out my steam with more recent games like Cyberpunk 2077 and FarCry 6 compared to my old favorites of Borderlands 2 or Risk of Rain 2. The latter games don't really stress the CPU, but everything else seems to push the temps to 100 degrees Celsius. I have tried fiddling with fan curves, reversing push/pull directions of AIO fans, even increasing pull from case fans. So far, nothing has seemed to work.
Fan curve is set a little aggressive (I don't mind the sound honestly) with 100% fans at 70c. The rig is basically stock from Micro Center with rad and fans on top.
I am thinking of switching from Cooler Master (listed below) to Corsair iCUE H100i Elite Capellix XT. I know its expensive, but for the RGB and air movement, it seems like it is a good AIO.
Specs of PC:
Intel 12700KF with Cooler Master ML240L RGB AIO (not the newest version, the one that says Cooler Master on the pump block)
MSI Z-690A Pro DDR5 Wi-Fi
Please let me know your thoughts, I appreciate all advice!! Please let me know if I need to edit or update with more details!!!!! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Sorry to hear about your issues with the system, it's still under warranty and this is certain abnormal. I tested on that platform this morning. 64C at a 4.7Ghz boost, drawing 105W. I tested Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra (No ray tracing) at 1080. Lower resolution, higher frame rate, more draw calls should push the CPU temps higher. Can you tell us your temps, CPU frequency and power draw when you're hitting 100C? Also, are you able to check your AIO pump speed as well as your idle temperatures? I'm using the MSI Afterburner overlay here to show this in game.

@PowerSpec_MikeW
Hey,
Thanks for the reply!! I greatly appreciate it. Here are my temps with that overlay in game, no ray tracing. I went into the bios and thermally limited the cpu to 95c, so thats why it isnt 100c. Idle have been averagely okay. Around high 30's low 40's. I am thinking of taking it into micro center this week to get a diagnostic
This is on low graphics.
This one is on ultra matching your settings.
and here is iCue for the fan speeds. Fan 1 is rad fans, 2 is pump speed, 3 are case fans.

Hey, I am sorry that I don't know how to tag, but please see above!!
-
Pump reports its running at 100%. There's no reason for it to be that hot on an 80W draw with that cooler. How's your airflow? Is there anything blocking the front intake tor the top exhaust for the rads?
-
Nope, inside the case is stock from Micro Center. I have not done anything to adjust the airflow or obstruct its paths.
Intake at the front, exhaust at the top and rear of the case.

Next thing I'd want to check is the pump/heatsink itself. Make sure the mounting pressure is good. However, if there's any issues there, it doesn't make sense for the idle temps to be normal. Can you check the temps individually per core with a program with HWINF64 and see what you're getting? Verify the package power as well if you could.
-
Mounting pressure seems okay. the cores all seem to be around the same give or take a couple degrees, would a photo be helpful? Power looks to be okay, just went into bios.
I am thinking of going to Micro Center today to get a diagnostic done since it is in warranty.

Did the package power match what you were seeing with the MSI Afterburner overlay? You can bring it and we'll look at it. One other thing you could test just to see if it's a more gradual climb. In the BIOS under the OC tab, there's a setting for the cooler. It should be set to AIO. Set it to the box cooler setting. It'll limit the max TDP to 190W. See if you get a more gradual climb up to 95C.
-
Yes, the power is matching. Nope, still just jumping up there after changing that in the bios settings.
-
I think it's best you bring it in so our service team can take a look at it for you and see what's going on here. The delta with the low idle temps really doesn't make much sense. My tests in the 12700K, synthetic all core max load, I hit 100C at 200W+ draw, 4.6Ghz on all the P-Cores. There's no reason I can see for you to be seeing 95-100C on that game. Clear area around the chassis for air intake and exhaust. Reasonable ambient air temp in the room are the only other factors to consider. It also sounds like it's spiking to 95C almost right away. If it was an airflow issue, it should be more gradual as heat saturates your loop than immediate.
The only thing else I'd ask you to check if you're comfortable and have thermal paste, is pulling the cooler off and seeing what the application looks like. Check if there's any obvious deformities with the AIO's heatsink
-
Hey, I brought it in to the store! The area around the chassis is clear. I told them the same things and showed the screenshots above. They definitely thought it was weird!
I will post an update when the store calls me in the next few days.
-
Hey,
Just wanted to update you, but I got the rig back finally. It seems apparently there was a piece of plastic stuck at the bottom of the heatsink.
Thank you for your help and suggestion to bring it in!!
-
Sorry for the trouble with the new system, but I'm glad the store was able to resolve it without taking up too much of your time.
