PowerSpec BIOS - Intel Default Settings - 8/23
Comments
-
Updated BIOS for the Z690-A DDR5/DDR4 are posted. Max WIFI and the Prime Z790 are next.
-
The Z690A DDR5 is not based on the newest AMI BIOS 0x12B. It still says it is the 8/23 0x129
-
Sorry, forgot to change the text earlier. AMI is the new BIOS with 0x12b.
-
Thank you @PowerSpec_MikeW Can you please let me know what is different about the Powerspec version compared to the generic AMI from MSI?
-
After I installed the new BIOS for my Z790 Edge Wifi I have had this happen 3 times (from the event log). I am using the intel default settings.

The monitor goes black and the PC reboots. The activity at the time was just looking at web pages.
-
Maximum security on the secure boot settings. We set USB wake, that's really it. The MSI defaults are pretty spot on.
-
Check bluescreenview to verify it's not logging anything:
Are there any errors prior to the Kernel-Power 41 under the custom views administrative events? Ran our test system for 3 days without seeing anything like that.
Try this new BIOS from MSI if that's all clean:
-
Nothing shows up in blue screen view. No errors prior to event other than "the previous shutdown was not expected"
-
Please try the BIOS direct from MSI I linked. If it works for you, I'll get it customized. If Not, I can post the HM8 BIOS while we figure it out.
-
Installed the BIOS from the link. Since there were 2 shutdowns today I suppose the only way to know is wait to see if it happens again. So far this BIOS seems fine. Any settings in it i should change?
-
There's nothing major, let me know what you see. I'll submit a request for the customizations Monday. It's just going to be Secure Boot Mode Preset to Maximum Security and Wake-Up Events - Enable Resume by USB if you want to wake the system with your keyboard/mouse rather than the power button.
-
ok yes i just noticed it doesnt wake up with the keyboard or mouse. otherwise still good, no crashing so far
-
Pulled the BIOS down and made the request. We'll have by the end of the week.
-
It just happened again with the different BIOS Critical 11/3/2024 07:42:47 Kernel-Power 41 (63)
Again just clicking on a link on a web page (could be coincidence)
-
Might be worth a try putting the previous BIOS (129 microcode) and see. If it happens to me then we will no its not the BIOS. I had no issues like that with the previous one. I don't seem to have that file anymore so if you could give me a link I will install it
-
HM8 is back up.
-
HM8 is now installed. I'll let you know how it works out
-
Its been about 24 hours with HM8 and no issues.
-
I'll test the new BIOS and see if I can replicate the issue. Sounds like something out of line with the idle voltages. Need to figure out if it's the BIOS or a binning issue.
-
OK Just happened again coming out of sleep mode with HM8
-
I think you may be better off replacing your power supply if it is the Powerspec Gold one that came with your PC. Read my post a while back. You have the exact same symptoms that I had.
It may be a coincidence but maybe your power supply is less than optimal now due to age. No offense to MicroCenter, but the Powerspec Gold PS is not exactly what I would pick if I had a choice.
With my new PS, No Event 41 shutdowns whatsoever. -
That is something i have seen on the web for this error but the PC is only 11 months old. Makes me think i might be something else like the CPU which as we know has had issues
-
I agree with Blender. Mine is working but produces a lot of noise under full load. I may swap mine out after warranty. My old Power Spec I replaced it when I bought and never has an issue. I probably should have done that with new one but aside from noise it's working for me. If under warranty you could also get them to swap it.
-
Mine was only 7 months old. It started Event 41'ing at like 4 months old. Unless you were cooking your CPU running it at 100C under full load, I think your CPU is fine.
-
PSU is a possibility. Symptoms are that the system loses power momentarily, but the board/idle voltage are also possible.
-
So its safe to assume it wasn't a BIOS issue since the older BIOS is doing the same thing?
-
Correct, though entirely possible that baseline voltage changes in the new BIOS made it more pronounced.
-
So an updated BIOS could correct this? It sounds like the HM9 update I used made a change that didn't get reversed by putting HM8 back on. Is that possible?
-
No, the flash process is complete on the rollback. I'm still trying to see if I can replicate this on one of our systems. So far, no luck. Let me know if this remains a persistent issue on HM8.
-
I have delayed my plan to replace the PSU. Still have some issues but trying to figure out the fans first. Mine is not the 'gold' PSU but rather looks like this.
